James Joyce pic by Ottacaro Weiss

"Autonomics" is a performative sonic automata construction project, based on the notion of energy models in electroacoustic music.

Its designer is Kinda Hassan born in Beirut in 1984 who now lives in Paris where she works with video and sound, mainly in the form of installations.

Energy models place action at the heart of musical creation, and Autonomics transposes these basic actions (percussion, friction, oscillation, flow, rebound, etc.) onto automated, mechanical lutherie. Sound research focuses on nuances, resonances and the “infrathin", seeking expressiveness in automation and inviting deep, active listening. The installation unfolds in two connected spaces, one where the automata perform and another where they resonate, a diptych that enables the deployment of a dialectic of sonic and visual perception.

"Sound is particularly interesting to me because it only exists internally within its movement; there is no grasping of a totality, there is no frozen image or still moment, there is no fixed representation."K.H.

At GMEM, during the "Propagations" festival in May 2024, Autonomics was shown in a two-fold shape installation, Ektara-extended and Sparked-away playing a 13min composition diffused on 4 speakers.
Very pleasant moment of listening at first, then observing the various mechanisms of the two "automatons  which activate the sounds: fascinating!

Where

In 2003, for the second edition of "Nuit Blanche" in Paris, the Halles had been transformed by six art projects, real urban experiments designed to meet the challenges of the site in terms of atmosphere, orientation, memory and animation: wanders in the heart of the garden, light calls, surrounding soundscapes, shows ...
Olivier Agid & Jean-Jacques Palix offered the public an underground sound path in the Place Carrée and air space in the Jardin des Halles, creating a sound image of the site.

Crowd cloud

"Crowd Cloud" is voice-based sound art installation welcoming visitors to Haneda Airport. Yuri Suzuki has collaborated with musical artist and composer Miyu Hosoi to create this long-term installation.

"... In their concept, if different tongues can be walls between people, sound an instead build bridges by providing a soft landing, especially for visitors coming from foreign countries, making them comfortable and gradually conversant with the new environment. Keeping the human voice at the core of their proposal, Hosoi and Suzuki distilled the sounds of the Japanese language, distilled “Hiragana*” sounds, which consist of 46 base characters with 5 singular vowels, 40 consonant-vowel unions and 1 singular consonant, and created a unique composition in which the sound emanates from a choir of dozens of standing horns, that are conversing with each other like people waiting for friends and relatives in the Arrival Hall of an airport." Paola ANTONELLI, Curator

*Hiragana is the basic Japanese phonetic script. It represents every sound in the Japanese language.

Birds & piano

Birds on telegraph lines are defining a score for prepared piano samples.
A creation by Kathy Hinde & Ivan Franco.

***&***

"… the standout experience is an audiovisual installation by Kathy Hinde: an ingenious music box, in which video of flittering birds on six electricity lines becomes an ever-changing score, their come-and-go presence triggering cracks and clicks in the guts of a piano mechanism. It’s somehow completely alive, and you could relax in its company for hours."

Submerged turntable

A remarkable installation of the west-coast American artist Evan Holm who is inspired by sounds and nature.

"...By placing these records underneath the dark and obscure surface of the pool, I am enacting a small moment of remorse towards this loss.   In the end however this is an optimistic sculpture, for just after that moment of submergence; tone, melody and ultimately song is pulled back out of the pool, past the veil of the subconscious, out from under the crush of time, and back into a living and breathing realm.  When I perform with this sculpture, I am honoring and celebrating all the musicians, all the artists that have helped to build our human culture."

Radio Fischli Weiss

With "Radio Fischli Weiss", ∏-Node echoes the masterpiece by Peter Fischli and David Weiss "The way things go", a 1987 film in which a first event generates a chain reaction, in the manner of dominoes falling one after another. By applying this principle to the transmission of sound, by luminous, aqueous, mechanical or radio means at the scale of the exhibition space, the collective work of ∏-Node makes it possible to observe the progression from module to  module and hear the transformation of sound as it moves through space.
Founded in 2014, the ∏-Node collective is dedicated to research around radio as a medium of experimentation. Development of dedicated tools, practice sharing workshops, Anti-Virus survival marathon program: the interests and actions of ∏-Node are broad and always borrowed from a dynamic that emerges from the collective's will.

Magnets and marbles

"Magnets and marbles" is an amazing project where little magnets that can be used to make cubes and others geometric figures: a Kaplamino’s Pitagora-style chain reactions.

Kaplamino is actually Mathieu Carillat, a 22-year-old engineering student based in Paris. When he’s not studying at The Leonardo da Vinci Engineering School (ESILV), he spends hours building and filming elaborate chain reactions on a tilted tabletop: Rube Goldberg machines that rely on marbles, magnets, and a bit of gravity to create some astounding little sequences.

We would have preferred that there were only the installation' sounds, without the music, but despite everything, it's fascinating ...

Steam machine music

Morten Riis is a danish artist born in 1980.
His music can be characterized as an electronic music that fuses elements of sound art with a more acousmatic and electro-acoustic approach. Lately his artistic work has focused around the investigation of the myriad of errors that arises when working with analogue and digital systems.

In his recent work Morten Riis tries to implement the notion of programmability, control and execution - the fundamentals of electronic and computer music, into a physical mechanical context in an attempt to search for the elementary elements of digital control.

In "Steam Machine Music", the sound material is generated using two music boxes that are programmable with perforated paper strips, a small Zither - a stringed instrument played with Meccano pulley wheels thus generating continuous drones instead of the normal plucking of the strings. Furthermore a dynamo that generates alternating current, which drives a small Lego engine which output is feed directly to a mixing desk generating a continuous tone which frequency is depended of the speed of the steam engine. Additionally a "drum" machine is incorporated which is built with Meccano parts that can be programmed to consist of up to four simple rhythm patterns; and the most important sound generating part is the sound of the machine itself, the rhythmic patterns and pulsating drones of the steam engine, the squeaking of the gear trains and the rattling of the whole structure is all important parts of the sonic experience.

Gregory Lasserre and Anais met den Ancxt are two artists who work together as a duo under the name Scenocosme. Their sound installation titled "Echos" is reminiscent of the creative work of Bartholomäus Traubeck and also that of Amanda Ghasssaei.

The reliefs of time engraved by the rings of a mulberry cup are read by a pick-up which reveals its sound rhythms in real time.

Circles (9) : Trimpin

altered version of of the two other monotypes below

thanks to Thierry Azam for pictures

These two monotypes issued from perforated discs for mecanical music instrument,
are they reserve for piano or organ? or organette? or home music box?

BUT! the main question is:
As Tim Wilson or Arthur B. Lintgen does with vinyl discs' grooves,
who is able to identify the 2 musics above which are supposed to be played?

The winner will have our eternal admiration.

"...The invention of disk music boxes made it affordable for many people to enjoy a variety of songs played on a music box at home. These discs were large and measured approximately 15 1/2″ in diameter. The disc pictured here was manufactured in 1889. The musical notes on the disc are represented by raised projections on a metal disk. Although still in limited production today (mostly for antique collectors and specialty applications), in general the production of these discs ceased around 1920..."

a Trimpin monotype

Trimpin, born in 1951, is a German sound artist currently living in Seattle (USA).

“An ongoing exploration of the concepts of sound, vision, and movement.”  - Trimpin

For 40 years, his work integrates sculpture and sound across a variety of media including fixed installation and live music, theater, and dance performance.
Combining ancient methods with scientific principles and XXIth century's technology,
he experiments, combining music, sounds and mechanics  that introduce the senses of perception to a totally new experience.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimpin

Trimpin build numerous strange instruments as a gamelan whose iron bells are suspended in air by electronic magnets, a microtonal xylophone and machines to play every instrument of the orchestra via MIDI commands.

He is largely credited for preserving Conlon Nancarrow's perforated piano-roll scores.
