" – Peu importe d’où l’on vient. Il n’y a pas de tonique. Le thème et son développement ne sont qu’un mirage…
Il y a une musique toujours inattendue.
– Et les dissonances ?
– Dieu les a créées, elles aussi…"
Jaume Cabré - "Voyage d'hiver" - 2014

pour capter tous les bruits qui circulent mystérieusement dans l’Univers.”

Crowd cloud

"Crowd Cloud" is voice-based sound art installation welcoming visitors to Haneda Airport. Yuri Suzuki has collaborated with musical artist and composer Miyu Hosoi to create this long-term installation.

"... In their concept, if different tongues can be walls between people, sound an instead build bridges by providing a soft landing, especially for visitors coming from foreign countries, making them comfortable and gradually conversant with the new environment. Keeping the human voice at the core of their proposal, Hosoi and Suzuki distilled the sounds of the Japanese language, distilled “Hiragana*” sounds, which consist of 46 base characters with 5 singular vowels, 40 consonant-vowel unions and 1 singular consonant, and created a unique composition in which the sound emanates from a choir of dozens of standing horns, that are conversing with each other like people waiting for friends and relatives in the Arrival Hall of an airport." Paola ANTONELLI, Curator

*Hiragana is the basic Japanese phonetic script. It represents every sound in the Japanese language.

Industrial symphony

This Joris Ivens's movie "Philips-Radio" a.k.a. "Industrial symphony" was the first dutch sound film, commissioned by the Philips Eindhoven company in 1931.
This same year, Dziga Vertov directed "Enthusiasm" wich expresses hope that industry lights the Soviet path to success.

The subject of the film is the production of radios and speakers: the camera registers the rhythm of the machines and the interaction with the proceedings of the factory workers and shows the operations inside the Philips Radio plant: In a mêlée of activity, glassblowers make delicate glass bulbs, machinery assists the bulb manufacture, a virtuoso glassblower begins a more complex tube used in radio broadcasting, workers perform their various specific assembly-line tasks. Cases are manufactured and machined, wire harnesses are assembled, loudspeakers are produced. As radios near completion, they are run through a series of tests. Engineers and draughtsmen define future developments.

Music and sound effects for that epic poem which finish with a spiralic dance of loudspeakers.

Sound of Empty Place

"The sound of empty space" explores relationships between microphones, speakers, and surrounding acoustic environments through controlled, self-generating microphone feedback.
By the sound artist Adam Basanta: his artistic and scholarly output interrogates the intersections between conceptual and sensorial dimensions of listening and audiovisual perception.
This installation was showed in Galery B-312 (Montreal - QC) in March 2015.

World’s biggest loudspeaker

The "World’s biggest loudspeaker", even if you whisper you can be heard a mile away.
The world’s biggest loudspeaker is on view at the 7th Audio Fair now in progress in Tokyo.
It measures 15 feet square, and is 35 feet long.
Made of wood it can be transported by truck to large field meetings, or to address vast audiences gathered in the open air. Even a whisper can be heard a mile away.
If it was placed on the cliffs of Dover the speakers voice could be heard in Calais in France a distance of over 20 miles.
Photo shows the outside loudspeaker which has been nicked named ”My Mother-in-Law” by Tokyo wags.

Speaker swinging

"Speaker Swinging" is an experiment for three or more swinging loudspeakers and nine audio oscillators in an enclosed space. The idea comes from hearing such things as Leslie speakers, moving vehicles with broadcasting sound systems, airplanes, and other moving sound sources, both industrial and organic.

The 1st performance of this piece, created by Gordon Monahan, Canadian artist, composer and pianist,  was located at Mercer Union, Toronto in 1982.

Voicepipe

As general rule, the "voicepipe" is a maritime term : a simply pipe where you talk down it.
Such systems appear to have been quite common in homes and offices in the first half of 20th century.
