RIP the great film-maker Béla Tarr  well known for its long takes and black and white movies depicting desolate landscapes and spiritual decline. 4 few famous excerpts of his work on "Beyond the coda". His major movie is probably "Satantango" inspired by the novel of the 2025 graduate Nobel Prize in Literature László Krasznahorkai, without forgetting "Damnation" and "The Werckmeister harmonies"

The fantastic opening sequence shot of "Werckmeister Harmonies", the film by Béla Tarr inspired by the Hungarian novel The Melancholy of the Resistance (1989) by László Krasznahorkai. This film, made up of only around thirty shots, is built on the ashes of the communist utopia while seeming to fear the advent of a new barbarism.

You can’t be idealistic in this world and not be crazy. Because they’ve created such a deep structure now, you can’t get in. And we don’t want to get in, we’re on the outside. But we’re not on the outside looking in, we’re on the outside looking out. So I feel we’re in a very healthy place. The idealists will always be in society, and we will survive.

One of the most amazing ritornello I ever listened to, in the Titanik Bar.
From the beautiful movie "Damnation" (Kárhozat) by Béla Tarr.
Sung by the actress Vali Kerekes on the nostalgic and minimalistic Mihàly Vig's music.

Visions of Europe

Just let's discuss about Europe
with this great sequence directed by the movie maker Béla Tarr
excerpt from "Visions of Europe" - a 2004's project

listening to the "ritournelle" of Mihàly Vig

The idea of this collective movie is simple: 25 countries, 25 visions from respected film directors from each of the respective 25 countries (in 2004) that form the new European Community - (28 countries now).
Each director just gave a personal vision of current or future life in this coming cultural melting pot.

The Turin horse

The begining of the amazing last movie of Béla Tarr starts with the story of a horse, in Torino, which is violently whiped by his coachman. The story says that Friedrich Nietzsche who was there embrace the neck of the animal, before to burst out stobbing... before to lose his mind.

As usual, the floating camera of the great artist Béla Tarr, in an absolute fluidity, works to generate a sensitive journey in clouds, dreams, torpor and sublime emptiness' contemplation.
A continuous wind, provoked by an helicopter during the filming, as well a minimal musical phrase used as a metronomic counterpoint bring us in a luminous meditation about existence of human being.
A masterpiece!
