"Recordings arise out of necessity. Why does anyone record anything, take a picture, sign a document? This recording came together from my personal connection with Cedrick Eyemenier of Coriolis Sounds who made a choice… I rehearsed 14 songs with Canadian drummer Marty Vickers and Australian bassist Gerard McFadden. I didn’t tell them what to play or how to play the songs… Cedrick’s English friend James S. Taylor took apart the basic tracks, added percussion, more drums, keyboards, and harmonium, and transformed the songs, asking me to speak an number of them, which I’d never done before… I didn’t tell anyone what they should do. It was a total collaboration, I happened to be the one with the songs and words. We made it together." Jeff Rian

For this new release on the ACEL label, French composer of musique concrète, electronic and instrumental music Jean-Baptiste Favory  invites us on a journey—one that transports us to the very heart of sound, whether concrete or electronic. "La grande marée"  (The Great Tide) alludes to the movement of waves—be they oceanic, sonic, or deeply personal—as well as serving as a chaotic reflection of the turbulent times we are all living through. These surging waves carry you across unknown and unheard-of realms.

Notre ami Jeff Rian publie son dernier opus "Just like this, raw" chez Coriolis Sounds.

"Just like this, raw", is the second album I’ve made with Cédrick Eymenier. Our first was "Such Is Life", in 2023, from which, in 2024, he made a film with the same title. Cédrick recorded the tracks in a small studio in Montpellier. I sang and played the guitar simultaneously, using a recently purchased Martin, electro-acoustic Dreadnought Junior, then overdubbed the electric guitar through a small amp, using my semi-hollow G&L Telecaster. We called the album “raw” because there are no effects, no click track, or micro-editing. Recorded at Coriolis Sounds. words by Jeff Rian

And don't miss this 2020 album—forgotten, but fortunately rediscovered: "Eyeballing" a record composed by Sarah Murcia—an exceptional jazz bassist (though her talents extend well beyond that genre!) and a brilliant collaborator with a wide range of artists and projects, such as Kamilya Jubran, the Magic Malik Orchestra, Las Ondas Marteles, and many others. On this release, she joins forces with producer Steve Argüelles, supported by Olivier Py (tenor and soprano sax), François Thuillier (tuba), and Benoît Delbecq (electronic drums, piano), with lyrics by our friend Vic Moan.

Newsboys Spasm Band

Newsboys Spasm Band - New Orleans - 1897

This 1897 photograph shows an early New Orleans band led by Emile “Stalebread Charlie” Lacoume (second from the far left). Members of the group were Harry Gregson, Emile “Whiskey” Benrod, Willie “Cajun” Bussey, Frank “Monk” Bussey and a boy known only as “Warm Gravy.” Another member who was known as “Chinee” and a singer known as “Family Haircut.” This band performed in the streets of Storyville in the 1890’s and early 1900’s.
in  “Storyville, New Orleans” a book by Al Rose

This band called "Newsboys Spasm Band" ("bad boys of the city"), founded in 1895, was a part of the life of the young boys working on the streets on New Orleans in the late nineteenth century. These homeless children were living in a special house called "Newsboys home". The term "spasm" applied to any band (often made up of children) who made musical instruments out of found objects not usually employed for such.
There is unfortunately no recordings of that group.

Rev. A.C. Porta said in 1899 : “Of the many creatures we see around us endowed with the power of locomotion, there is none whose nature is so little known as the barefooted, flitting, noisy, ubiquitous newsboy. To the casual observer he is a compound of cat and monkey, with a strong admixture of quicksilver. In the opinion of many the newsboy has no father, no mother, no brothers, no sisters,  no cousins, no friends, no particular home…Alas! the want of a home and the lack of friends are but too often sad undeniable facts.”

“What are you doing here?” I asked one of them. “We was listenin’ ter de ‘Spasm Band,’ Fawder,” he answered pointing to the boys on the bench. “Spasm Band!” I exclaimed. “And what is that?” “Oh! It’s dem fellers who has got introoments made wid soap and cigar boxes, and mouf harmonica and tamboureen, and was givin’ us a concert.”
Rev. Augustine.C. Porta in "An account of Newsboys' home in New Orleans"

Base de données: Portail Mondial des Revues

-----------------

A video installation projects a genealogy of magazines from around the world. It presents a global overview of magazines from the late 18th century to the present day, skillfully linking the publications—and their covers—with their historical and geographical contexts, while also showcasing historical content, manifestos, portraits, and more. The cultural magazine is an essentially modern phenomenon. It serves as a space for experimentation with writing and graphic design, but above all, it is a critical, visual, and literary medium that has consistently played a role in the struggles for emancipation waged by women and men across the globe.

In this sense—and given the global scope of modern colonialism—one can say that the cultural journal is, by its very essence (characterized by hybridity, mobility, and a precarious existence often born of urgency and necessity), a quintessential product of the colonial experience and, consequently, a laboratory of modernity. It is within these constrained and divided spaces that the journal as we understand it emerges: a critical and political space striving for autonomy. The history of these journals and their content continually reflects this long continuum.

The oldest French-language cultural magazine may well have originated in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with the launch of *L’Abeille Haytienne* on July 7, 1817. The publication consistently reflects an ambition for independence—one that was inevitably thwarted, as it was shaped by a combination of distinctive voices and determined authors drawn to fresh political and cultural perspectives.

Featuring over a thousand periodicals, the exhibition makes no claim to exhaustiveness; rather, it demonstrates how a collective, multilingual, and decentered research initiative—such as the one conducted at the INHA—reinforces a global history of art. It enables a re-evaluation—and, above all, brings to light—the intellectual, political, artistic, and critical life that flourished at the heart of colonial empires.

"Seismography of Struggle"
Towards a Global History of Critical and Cultural Journals

"Seismography of Struggle" brings a kaleidoscope of non-European critical and cultural journals, including those from the African, Indian, Caribbean, Asian, and South American diaspora. A critical and cultural journal, is, through its hybridity, its mobility and its precarious existence, a pure object of colonial experience. By its nature, it is a laboratory of modernity. In the wake of revolutionary movements of the end of the 18th century and up to the watershed year of 1989, they were often born out of urgency and necessity. The populations of the territories who represent themselves in this sound and visual work experienced colonialism, slavery, Apartheid, and genocides.  The show's montage of images and sounds, covers, texts, and portraits of foundational figures, as well as the key words and key discursive and graphic strategies for liberation, reverberate across the 800 images featured in Seismography of Struggle.

John Tilbury at home

It is always a great pleasure to listen to John Tilbury and his delicate approach to the piano—whether prepared or not. A pioneer of minimalist music (associated with figures such as Morton Feldman and John Cage) as well as experimental and improvised music—notably through the renowned trio AMM and his close ties to Cornelius Cardew and members of the Scratch Orchestra—Tilbury has been delighting audiences for nearly fifty years. Furthermore, in 2008 he published the biography "Cornelius Cardew – a life unfinished", offering us a wealth of recollections regarding the creative freedom of those wild 1970s and 80s.

"At home" is a 4CDs box celebrating the work of one of the giants of contemporary music, featuring works by – among others – Cornelius Cardew, Morton Feldman, Howard Skempton, Christian Wolff, Linda Catlin Smith, Keith Rowe, Mark R. Taylor, John Lely, Michael Parsons, Guillaume Machaut and Dave Smith. Produced by the sound recordist Simon Reynell on Another Timbre. A splendid anthology!
