Wochenende in Berlin

"Wochenende" (Weekend ") is a movie made in 1929, without any image, which uses the soundtrack of a cinematographic film.
In a futuristic spirit, like an anticipation of noise and concrete music, it is the work of German filmmaker Walter Ruttman (1987-1941), a pioneer of abstract cinema.

After his first abstract films (Opus I, II, II, IV) in the early 20s and his remarkable visual essay: "Berlin, symphony of a great city" in 1927, Walter Ruttman, a real forerunner of "The man to the camera "by Dziga Vertov, directed ”Wochenende", a week-end worker's sonorous narrative collage of different realistic and family situations (telephone conversations, mechanical sounds, children's songs, cat mewing, bells, whistles, etc ...).

"It's a film without images, yes, without images, not a phonograph record, but a film recording edited according to the spirit of the cinema, which lacks only the purely visual images. As we said silent movie, we can talk today: "to make a blind film". Jean Lenauer - For you - July 24, 1930
The soundtrack was released on CD in 1994 by Metamkine in his famous collection "Cinema pour l’oreille”.

I pini del Gianicolo

The third lento part of Ottorino Respighi's famous symphonic poem "Pini di Roma" composed in 1924, is entitled "I pini del Gianicolo", evoking the atmosphere of the night under what is considered the Janiculum, the eighth hill of Rome, along the right bank of the Tiber.
Towards the end of this part a clarinet solo is heard as well the true song of a blackbird.
For the premiere of this piece on December 14, 1924 in Rome at the Teatro Augusteo, with the Orchestra of the National Academy Sainte-Cécile under the direction of Bernardino Molinari, these songs of blackbird were broadcast by phonographs, or more likely by gramophones.
No doubt one of the first times the gramophone device is introduced in the classical orchestra
as a full instrument, for a public concert.
Nowadays, this charm is now broken because the song of the blackbird is broadcast by tape, sampler, or other audio support.

Other uses of these machines took place at the same time with the unfinished composition of the "bad boy" Georges Antheil’s opera titled "Cyclops", as an adaptation of the twelfth episode of Ulysses by James Joyce.
Antheil planned to use several gramophones, as well as other mechanical and electrical devices as an installation.
Unfortunately, the piece was never finished to be composed  and did not happen.

"I saw thousand of electric lampsstrung in the heavens and illuminated from one switchboard to create God; vast cinemas projected a new dimension in the skies; music machines large enough to vibrate all cities"

note that the Janiculum is not listed in the famous "7 hills of Rome" because this territory is not part of the contours of the old city.

"Sounds of the Projection Box" by  Michael Lightborne

"This new record contains recordings, made in 2016 and 2017, documenting the shifting sonic texture of the cinema projection box, as it changes from 35mm to digital projection. By 2014, the majority of UK cinemas had already converted to digital, making many projectionists redundant, and quietly altering the way that cinema works, as both an industry and an experience. Very few cinemas maintain the ability to project 35mm film alongside digital, and it was in some of the remaining, tenacious boxes that I sought the persistent sounds of analogue projection...
This album was developed as part of The Projection Project, a research project based in the Film and Television Studies Department at the University of Warwick, which seeks to record and investigate the history of cinema projection in Britain..."

Estridentismo

http://boisbresilcie.blogspot.com/2016/

"Stridentism", influenced by many trends as the most important, the Italian Futurism, was an artistic and multidisciplinary avant-garde movement, founded in Mexico City at the end of 1921 by Manuel Maples Arce.
Stridentism (1921-1927 when the group separates, for political reasons) shared some characteristics with Cubism, Dadaism, Futurism and Ultraism, but developed a specific social dimension, taken from the Mexican Revolution.

Manuel Maples Arce (May 1, 1900 - June 26, 1981) was a Mexican poet, writer, art critic and collector, lawyer and diplomat. He began his volumes of poetry with epigraphs and his literary movement with manifestoes.

In 1976, the young writer Roberto Bolaño did an interview with this avant-gardist poet who appears as a character in Bolaño's novel Los detectives salvajes (1998).

Konstantin Kovalsky

Konstantin Kovalsky (1890-1976) was a Russian trained violinist and one of the first Theremin players.

As he had broken his hand and looked at the non-contact Theremin as an ideal instrument to start the music again, Kowalski constructed his own instrument, with which he varied the pitch with his right hand, but with a pedal the volume. With left he served a series of buttons that allowed further control over the music.

In 1932, for the Esfir Shub's documentary "Komsomol - Leader of electrification" with a Gawriil Popov's musical composition, Kovalsky played the Theremin parts.

Kovalsky also performed concerts during the period in which all forms of modernism in Soviet art were put forward.
With the ensemble for electronic music of the television and radio of the USSR, he played more than 3000 concerts as a solo musician for folk music, Soviet political songs, and popular pieces of classical music.
After his death, Lydia Kavina replaced him.

Nuit des noirs

"nuit des noirs"
1989

Miloslav Kabeláč (1908 – 1979) is a Czech composer and conductor, belonging to the foremost Czech modern symphonists. New ways of expression and his specific tone-creative principles presentated by Kabeláč above all in his later works. Perspectives opened by him to modern understanding and conception of traditional forms and genres have not yet penetrated our general conscience in a way corresponding to their importance and impact. His opuses content except 8 symphonies further orchestral compositions, organ a piano works, cantatas, choruses and electro-acoustic music (he was also president of Czech society for electro-acoustic music). In the totalitarian period Kabeláč´s work found itself on the periphery of official attention and was performed only sporadically and in a limited choice of compositions.
