La vieille grille

Probably one of the earlier performance of Gong in 1968 at the club "La vieille grille" in Paris (France).
Gong was formed in 1967 by Daevid Allen, who, after he was founding Soft Machine in 1966, was denied to entry again to the United Kingdom because of a visa complication.

with Daevid Allen: guitar and vocals
Gilli Smyth & Ziska Baum: vocals
Loren Standlee: flute

& the unknow pretty woman in the audience could be the french singer Marie Laforêt?

Mogador tape

The french artist Vincent Epplay build experimental and unclassifiable artworks exploring the interaction between sound process and visual shapes, as well interrogating its mode of distribution and reception.

He has produced a dozen of records for various music labels and collaborated with lot of musicians and sound artists as Sébastien Roux, Samon Takahashi, Jac Berrocal, David Fenech ... and frequently use to combinate live sound performances with movies.

Interview by Brian Olewnick to read here

"... From 2002, my choices were more focused on new musical realms, some more spacious forms of music with new textures, slower pace, presence of silence, a preference for collective sound rather than chatty ping-pong playing only based on energy and spontaneity …"
Jacques Oger

"Around music, écouter le monde" is a serie of 12 rare and impressive documentaries  published by La Huit, with the support of Musée du quai Branly & CNC in Paris.
With a synthesis's booklet by Bernard Lortat-Jacob & Hélène Lallemand.

- Bernard Lortat-Jacob

Marino Zuccheri & Luigi Nono at RAI Studio of Phonology  - courtesy of Fondazione Archivio LN

The Milan "Institute of Musical Phonology", designed by sound engineer Alfredo Lietti, was created in June 1955 at the RAI headquarter by Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna.

From that year, Milan became a essential point in the international electroacoustic music post-war scene, through a new expressive language, which was a synthesis of the concrete and electronic experiences happening in Europe at the Studio für Elektronische Musik (WDR) in Cologne and at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) in Paris.

"The RAI Studio of Musical Phonology is the outcome of the matching between music and the possible new means of analyzing and processing that sound has" - Luciano Berio

A short document (in 2 parts)

Marino Zuccheri and Luigi Nono

about Alfredo Lietti:
“Two of the first electronic works in my record collection – Berio’s Visage from 1961, and John Cage’s Fontana Mix from 1958 – were created there with Zuccheri (Designer and technician at the RAI Studio) . Even today, both of these pieces sound impressively vivid and dynamic, and what we should now recognise is that such qualities should be attributed to the technician as much as to the composer.” - David Toop, The Wire, 2008

Song without words

A world premiere performance of the work of Yannis Kyriakides titled "Words and Songs without Words".
This work is a response to a quote from Felix Mendelssohn from a letter to to Marc-André Souchay dated 15th of October 1842. In it he explained his position regarding his Songs Without Words cycle, highlighting the opposite view he takes from the norm, regarding the relative meaningfulness of words in relation to music...
This piece explores not only the individual semantic problems of words and music individually but what happens in their combination when the music is forced into a linguistic function.
