"Crying glacier" was recorded by Ludwig Berger on the Moreratsch Glacier in Switzerland, the third largest galcier in the eastern Alps. A part of these recordings constitute the soundtrack of the eponymous documentary film directed by Lutz Stautner. Ludwig Berger is a sound artist, musician and educator whose work focuses on the sonic and vibratory dimensions of the landscape.
The album invites listeners to
relate to the glacier as a body, filled with life, here gently
auscultated by Berger’s hydrophones. With "Crying glacier" and its
intrinsic more-than-human collaborative nature, Ludwig Berger amplifies
the Morteratsch Glacier’s voice to emphasize its personhood, and other
glaciers' urgent need for recognition and preservation.
