Hossein Alizadeh is a famous Iranian composer and Tar and Setâr instrumentalist. Born in 1951 in Teheran, he also is a teacher and great preserver of the persian Radif tradition, a musical corpus of old melodic figures preserved through many generations by oral tradition.
The Setâr is a stringed instrument, a type of lute played solo or accompanying voice. It is a member of the Tanbur family of long-necked lutes with a range of more than two and a half octaves. Originally a three stringed instrument, a fourth string was added by the mid 19th century.
Here is a fascinating Setâr improvisation in concert with Dariush Zargari playing the Zarb.
You can also check the amazing setâr player Khorshid Dadbeh.
& the who uses as well to practice the Setâr.
