Omaggio a Joyce

"Thema (Omaggio a Joyce)" is an amazing composition by Luciano Berio, using tape and the voice of Cathy Berberian, his wife, the intense and unique contemporary avant-garde music vocalist. Words are issued from chapter XI "Les Sirènes" of  "Ulysses", the James Joyce's famous novel. As an electroacoustic composition, the piece uses the possibilities of combining phonemes and the meaning of sounds that Joyce used in his text.

A first version, titled "Omaggio a Joyce. Documenti sulla qualità onomatopeica del linguaggio poetico" was for a radio documentary and was build at "Institute of Musical Phonology", in Milan, Italy. Initially conceived for four audio channels, this version was finaly recorded in stereo in 1958 under the title "Thema (Omaggio a Joyce)" and published on a Turnabout' LP. In 1995, it was digitally restored as the definitive version.

"... I tried to interpret musically a reading of Joyce’s text, developing the polyphonic intent that characterizes the eleventh chapter of Ulysses (entitled “Sirens” and dedicated to music), whose narrative technique was suggested to the author by a common procedure of polyphonic music: the fuga per canonem..."

Sahba Aminikia

"Shetàbàn", a piece for viola solo played by  Hannah Nicholas.

Sahba Aminikia  is an Iranian-American composer born in Tehran in 1981.
Trained in music by Persian pianists as Safa Shahidi and Gagik Babayan, in Russia at the St. Petersburg Stat Conservatory by Boris Ivanov Tishchenko, and in England by Sir Michael Tippett, he is now living in California.

"Life in Tehran taught me to appreciate hardship and beauty at the same time, and this is something that, due to heavy media propaganda, is mainly obscured in Western minds. I was brought up with the poetry of Hafiz, Rumi, and Saadi, and with Persian classical music, but was also largely exposed to the music of Pink Floyd, Beatles, Queen, and various jazz musicians. This conflict between the morals of a theocracy and Western cultural imports also exists in my mind, and I see it as a life process towards finding a common ground for communication and dialogue in my music."  Sahba Aminikia

He wrote numerous orchestral, vocal and solo pieces  performed all around the world, with famous orchestras and musicians.
He has been commissioned by theater companies, contemporary classical ensembles, film scores, Persian traditional music groups as well as jazz bands including Kronos Quartet, Symphony Parnassus, Mobius Trio, San Francisco Conservatory of New Music Ensemble and many others.

Nova, quelques archives

http://www.gallimard.fr/Catalogue/GALLIMARD/Le-Chemin/Rose-poussiere

Marvin Pontiac

http://johnlurieart.com/
deer and spotlight

John Lurie, the main founder of the NY's combo "The Lounge Lizards" in the late 70s and  actor in the famous Jim Jarmush' movies (Stranger than paradise - 1984, Down by law - 1986)  disappeared from NYC for quite one decade after a stalking incident. His whereabouts were a mystery and he is living now outside the United States on an island in a tropical climate where he spends much of his time painting.

After the amazing posthumous works of the African-Jewish musician, the legendary Marvin Pontiac in 1999, John Lurie is coming back with a new Marvin Pontiac CD issued last november: "The asylum tapes" , a twisted collection of songs about livestock, garden gnomes and horses falling down wells. Accompanying himself on guitar and banjo, Marvin’s plaintive voice is otherworldly.

As enigmatic as the first CD, this new record "The asylum tapes" contains amazing short blues and unexpected songs.

Described by the press upon its release in 1982 as an "absolutely mesmerising double album travelling through progressive rock, via industrial folk to freaky art-punk whilst sounding delightfully coherent" and "a huge slab of mindblowing dark psychedelia" the album was critically acknowledged for its peculiarly British kosmische.

Trame XI & una Rosa

Martin Matalon (born in Buenos Aires in 1958) compose "Trame XI" en 2011,

Burning Ghosts

Burning Ghosts is a band from the Los Angeles underground.
leaded by the trumpet player Daniel Rosenbom, the band explodes jazz-metal gender that singes the fabric of a fraying American culture.

The four musicians are the most acclaimed musicians in the LA experimental music scene. Playing scorching instrumentals that touch on heavy metal and jazz, the music is uncompromising and intense, filled with precise rhythmic complexity and textural power. Their first release on Tzadik is an incendiary blockbuster and is destined to become an instant classic!

"The music spits fire and lightning, maintaining it's fast speed, regardless of the complexity of the music. The dynamics at play are powerful with the music moving from slow and ponderous to white hot and fast... This is heavy and dense music that is still able to retain a tenuous tie to the jazz tradition while blasting it relentlessly into the future."

Jake Vossler | Guitars
Richard Giddens | Bass
Aaron McLendon | Drums

Here is one of their first live performance with Tina Raymond on drums.
Live at Curve Line Space on March 11, 2016

Dhrupad

Dhrupad is the oldest surviving form of Hindustani classical music.
It is the oldest form of compositions in indian classical music and a form that is also found in the South Indian as Carnatic music.

The Dagar dynasty is the main stream for 19 generations to maintain the tradition of this music. They all belonged to a prestigious family of dhrupad singers whose founder was Baba Gopal Das, an Hindu who is said to have converted to Islam at the time of Emperor Muhammad Shah. His younger son Behram Khan established himself in Jaipur, where he became a court musician of great repute. He taught his brother's grandsons Allabande and Zakiruddin Khan who used to sing together, quickly asserting themselves as the foremost dhrupad vocalists of their time.

Ustad Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar (1934 - 1989) and Ustad Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar (1933 - 1994) are the younger brothers of the family. They trained many students, including Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, the son of Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar, who is keeping the family tradition alive along with other dagarvani exponents.
You can listen to their talent starting at 13' of this movie. Impressive!
and totaly amazing around 33'...

You can also look to the 1982's movie titled "Dhrupad" directed by Mani Kaul.

Related Rocks

"Related Rocks" is an amazing 1997 music by the finnish composer Magnus Lindberg. In 1977, Magnus Lindberg is - along with Kaija Saariaho and Esa-Pekka Salonen - one of the founding members of the association Korvat auki! ("Open your ears!"), whose mission is to promote contemporary music by organizing concerts and offering a meeting place for composers, instrumentalists, critics and musicologists. In addition to his compositional activities, Lindberg is a pianist, and his concert career will lead him to create many pieces. In 1980, with Esa-Pekka Salonen, he founded the experimental ensemble Toimii! ("It works!"), which must become, according to his own words, "a laboratory where composers and instrumentalists could work together on new means of musical expression", notably through a work on improvisation in concert.

*******************************

for 2 pianos, 2 percussionists and electronic set, "Related Rocks" is a kind of patchwork with lot of different sounds, very different harmonic and rhythmic patterns, even distant stylistic allusions.

percussions : Samuel Favre, Victor Hanna  & pianos : Hidéki Nagano, Sébastien Vichard,

all 4 soloists of the Ensemble Contemporain

*************

& to listen to: "Kraft", one of the main composition of Lindberg, considered as one of the great sonic brouhahas of the late 20th century. "Kraft" is the aural result of what happens when German metal-merchants Einstürzende Neubauten meets Xenakis (two of Lindberg’s most important inspirations at the time) filtered through an iconoclastic twentysomething Finnish composer’s imagination.

Roomful Of Teeth

Roomful Of Teeth is a vocal ensemble from North Carolina, founded in 2009 by Brad Wells. Its stated mission is to "mine the expressive potential of the human voice".

Through study with masters from non-classical traditions the world over, the nine voice ensemble continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and, through an ongoing commissioning project, invites composers to create a new repertoire without borders.
They have studied Tuvan throat singing, yodeling, belting, Inuit throat singing, Korean p’ansori, Georgian singing, Sardinian "cantu a tenore", Hindustani music and Persian classical singing with some of the world’s top performers and teachers of the styles.

Great singers, and subtle compositions!

The artist and anarchist agitator Ben Morea emerged after over 35 years of anonymity to discuss his participation in the late 1960s with the Lower East Side-based collectives Black Mask and Up Against the Wall Motherfucker.
Of humble origins, Morea gained notoriety as an associate of Abbie Hoffman, a defendant in an attempted murder trial, a vocal supporter of feminist (and Andy Warhol assailant) Valerie Solanas and as the only person to be expelled from the Situationist International who was never a member in the first place.
